The activity was attended by participants from various countries such as Malaysia, Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan, Ghana, Gambia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and also Indonesia. The students and alumni of Educational Psychology Master Program also joined the event. There are several material topics that will be presented in the whole series of events. In the first class, the subject was \u201cReading for Social and Emotional Learning\u201d lectured by the Associate Professor Rhoda Myra Garces-Bacsal from United Arab Emirates University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The activity began with the opening accompanied by welcoming remarks from the Head of the Educational Psychology Study Program, Dr. Tina Hayati Dahlan. The activity was officially opened by Director of Directorate International Affair of UPI, Achmad Buchori Muslim, M.A, Ph.D. and continued with the subject lectured by Professor Myra Garces-Bacsal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this occasion, Professor Myra revealed that the habit of reading is one of the strategies that can be used to improve the social and emotional abilities of students such as self-awareness, management, and decision-making responsibility. This is because teaching or embedding social and emotional values in learning could make students feel more valued, more involved in the learning process, and improve learning performance. While at the end of this whole process, students hopefully could be part of good global citizen. This can be done using the benefits of a picture book in which the values of diversity are embedded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/psikopend.sps.upi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-11-02-at-10.52.59.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1312\" src=\"http:\/\/psikopend.sps.upi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-11-02-at-10.52.59-300x130.jpeg\" alt=\"WhatsApp Image 2021-11-02 at 10.52.59\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psikopend-sps.upi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-11-02-at-10.52.59-300x130.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/psikopend-sps.upi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-11-02-at-10.52.59-1024x443.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/psikopend-sps.upi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-11-02-at-10.52.59.jpeg 1272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, Professor Myra explained that to promote SEL in the classroom, teacher could use diverse picture books. The definition of a picture book is a combination of text and images that provide space for readers to interpret the meaning in the book from various perspectives. The use of picture books containing the values of diversity can make students from minority or marginal groups feel more recognized and appreciated. It is also explained some strategies that could be done by educators in promoting social and emotional learning through picture books. Those are read more and read diversely, build reading community in school, enrich classroom literacy, and use books as a gateway to wonder, not to preach moral lessons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this occasion, participants were also invited to participate in applying the practice of reading aloud in several picture books that were provided.
