TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON GENDER ROLES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Abstract: The paper discusses the teacher’s perspective on gender roles in early childhood education and care setting (ECEC). ECEC is the most gendered field in which the majority teacher in the workforce is female. Using a case study approach, conducted in a kindergarten in Cirebon, Indonesia. This paper aims to expand a feminist post-structuralist theory to analyze the structures of language and social structure of gender role in ECEC. The study involves three teachers as participants, one female teacher and two male teachers. The result of this study indicates that teachers already have knowledge about gender equality. Nevertheless, the teachers seem unaware that sometimes they perceive gender bias in subtle ways.
