“Kamu emosional banget deh jadi orang!”

Pernah dengar cuitan seperti itu? Yang konotasinya negatif? Faktanya, emosi itu bukan hanya emosi negatif, namun ada juga emosi positif. Apa itu emosi positif?

Emosi positif adalah bagian dari pembahasan psikologi positif, yang secara historisnya digunakan untuk menyembuhkan penyakit mental korban Perang Dunia II. (Compton, W. C., & Hoffman, E, 2013)

Emosi positif sebagai salah satu fondasi psikologi positif dapat membantu melawan beberapa masalah. Selama 30 tahun, penelitian ilmiah telah membuktikan bahwa emosi positif dan perilaku adaptif penting untuk hidup yang produktif dan menyenangkan. (Compton, W. C., & Hoffman, E, 2013)

Menurut Lyubomirsky et al., (2002) orang-orang yang mengalami emosi positif cenderung memiliki kesuksesan yang lebih besar dalam beberapa aspek kehidupan dibandingkan dengan orang-orang yang cenderung beremosi negatif.

Fredrickson (2001) menggagasi studi tentang emosi positif yang mencoba memahami manfaat-manfaatnya. Teorinya yang dikenal dengan Broaden-and-Build Theory menyatakan bahwa pengalaman afeksi positif memiliki pengaruh yang berkepanjangan untuk personal growth dan development seseorang. Caranya?

Emosi positif dapat membatalkan emosi negatif, karena kedua emosi ini tidak bisa dialami bersamaan, emosi positif yang dirasakan ketika memuncaknya emosi negatif ternyata dapat membatalkan efeknya yang berkepanjangan. Kegembiraan (joy) dan kepuasan (satisfaction) dapat mengurangi level stress pada tingkatan psikologis. (Boniwell, 2016)

Selain itu, perasaan-perasaan yang ada pada emosi positif positif seperti kenikmatan, kebahagiaan, kepuasan, pertemanan yang hangat, cinta dan kasih sayang dapat meningkatkan resiliensi dan kemampuan mengatasi sesuatu (kemampuan mengatasi masalah). Kebalikannya, emosi negatif menurunkan hal-hal tersebut. (Boniwell, 2016)

Tips untuk meningkatkan emosi positif dapat dilakukan dengan cara latihan relaksasi seperti relaksasi otot, yoga, dan latihan meditasi yang dapat mencapai state of mindfulness dan membawa manfaat lain. (Fredrickson, 2001)
