Abstract: This paper discusses gender discourses in an early childhood education setting in Bandung City. Children’s voices are often not being heard as an individual as the child is considered not competent enough and too young to be able to understand ‘adult’s’ matters such as gender discourse. While in fact they are often being objectified by the gender stereotypes that are deeply rooted in our society. The main focus is on understanding the children’s perspective and understanding on how they see themselves as gendered beings. Using qualitative analysis, we also attempt to explore how children see and identify gender diversity and gender expressions through qualitative analysis. The result is expected to yield how young children ages four to five years old construct and negotiate their gender identities. The findings are hoped to contribute to understanding the importance of taking into account children’s perspectives in gender issues.
